How to make brown sugar at home
Brown sugar is one of my favorite sweeteners and is perfect for holiday baking!
My families favorite is cinnamon swirl bread right now with a cinnamon brown sugar mix in the swirl!
I love how it adds more robust flavor and I often substitute it when regular sugar is called for.
It is also so very easy to make!
I have made it my mission to try and make things as I run out of them and this didn’t even cross my mind until about 6 months ago. Brown sugar comes in such small bags and is so expensive!
Making it is as easy as mixing your favorite granulated sugar with molasses. I used my kitchen aid mixer for convenience, but it would easily mix with a spoon or your hands!
Molasses does have a distinct flavor so you can really make this to preference. Molasses is also full of minerals to add a little boost to your baking and knowing a little bit more of what is in your food!

Recipes typically call for light or dark brown sugar the ratios are:
1 cup sugar to 2 teaspoons molasses for light
1 cup sugar to 1 tablespoon molasses for dark
But I would really go for taste preference. There are a few types of molasses, I use black strap which definitely has a heartier flavor than a mild or dark molasses if that bothers you!
Once made store in air tight container, I use a mason jar because I typically go through it pretty quick. If it is going to be stored longer a baggie with as much air removed may work better.
Let me know if you try it! I’ll never go back to store bought, I just love the taste and texture!
